Why can dates be blocked without a reservation?
Airbnb’s calendar can include manual blocks and blocks related to availability settings, preparation time, advance notice or minimum stays. Its calendar sync guide explains the distinction.
Imagine an owner reserves a weekend for maintenance. A feed reader may show unavailable dates, but there is no guest checkout to clean after. Conversely, an owner visit might genuinely require a clean. The unavailable block alone cannot tell a cleaner which case it is.
Three examples for a cleaning schedule
| Calendar item | Meaning | Cleaning decision |
|---|---|---|
| Reservation: June 8–11 | Arrival June 8; checkout June 11 | Plan a checkout clean on June 11. |
| Owner block: June 12–14 | Unavailable for a reason the host knows | Ask the host; do not automatically infer a guest clean. |
| Reservation ends June 18; next begins June 18 | A same-day departure and arrival | Confirm the available cleaning window and cleaner acceptance. |
These examples separate a calendar fact from an operational decision. The host still decides whether an owner visit, maintenance job or mid-stay service needs additional cleaning.
Why is the clean after the last booked night?
For a June 8–11 stay, the guest sleeps there on June 8, 9 and 10 and checks out on June 11. A display that shades those three nights can look different from a task list that marks June 11 as the cleaning day. Compare the arrival and departure dates, not just the colored cells.
This follows the exclusive end-date convention explained in the iCal guide. Moving the clean back to the last occupied night would put it before departure.
How does Calbnb handle the distinction?
Calbnb creates checkout cleans from events it recognizes as explicit reservations. It keeps other events as blocked dates instead of creating a clean for each one. This deliberately avoids turning an unexplained unavailable period into a promised cleaning job.
Recognition depends on the source event. If a real stay arrives only as an unknown block, Calbnb may not create its clean. Check the preview against a known booking and confirm unexpected results in Airbnb. The app does not reconstruct hidden reservation details.
What should you agree with your cleaner?
- Use the checkout list for the usual guest-turnover schedule.
- Treat an unexplained block as a question for the host, not an accepted job.
- Send owner-stay, maintenance and mid-stay cleaning instructions separately.
- Check any same-day turnover against the actual agreed arrival and departure times.
A short turnover handoff makes the difference explicit: which property, which departure, who is cleaning, and when the home must be ready.
Share the dates. Keep it simple.
